Daniel 9 contains a remarkable prayer and a remarkable answer. Daniel knew from the prophets that the 70 year captivity in Babylon was coming to an end, but he also knew that there were serious spiritual issues in the hearts of the people. Getting the people out of Babylon was one thing, but how would they get the Babylon out of the people? The problem of sin and forgiveness requires the Messiah to come for his people. He is the one who will put an end to sin and atone for wickedness. When the Jewish people in the time of Jesus rejected their Messiah, it set into motion a chain of events that would bring about the destruction of Jerusalem, which happened in A.D. 70. They refused to see the answer to their spiritual exile. Daniel did not excuse the failure of his people, he confessed them. This is what we need to do in order to rescued from our spiritual exile and separation from God.
