Emotions are the language of the soul. They reveal how are hearts are doing with God and others. Emotions are tainted by sin as much as any other part of our personality.
God is an emotional God. He delights in justice, rejoices in his people, God experiences anger and wrath, and is compassionate and loving.
The book of Psalms is a tour guide to the emotional life of the believer. There are Psalms of joy, but also Psalms of confusion, doubt, and heartache.
Emotions arise in the context of relationships. Emotions are our responses to the way others move in relation to us. They can move toward us to attack. They can move away from us in abandonment. They can move toward us in love.
Emotions make us realize we are not home. We groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to be fully realized one day. Until then, we are to put our hope in God.
