“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
[Note – the first part of the sermon today did not get recorded. Also, last week’s sermon was not recorded due to technical problems]
God rescued his people out of Egypt, protected them on their way, and brought them to himself at Mount Sinai. Israel was God’s treasured possession. God Israel from the nations to be a testimony to the nations. God now calls the church to be salt and light within the world.
As God descended from heaven to the mountain, the people had to prepare to meet their God. God glory was so frightening to them that they begged for Moses only to go up the mountain. They knew they needed a mediator to go for them. The need for a mediator to approach God is still needed. Without Jesus Christ we would not be able to stand in the presence of God.
The Israelites stood in awe of God. Awe is that realization that we are in the presence of something greater than ourselves. Our culture is awe-deprived, but God created us to be in awe of him.
